Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise as a young kid. Aunt Denise was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. She showed DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay learnt by doing that art can be a powerful instrument for activism. DuVernay's mother also had a social consciousness and taught DuVernay to express herself via art. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. The summers she spent in Selma, Alabama would be the inspiration for her later an animated film on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was tasked to look-out and search for the house of an individual Jury member. Her tasks to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision not to continue in journalism, she shifted into the industry of publicity. DuVernay joined a small studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also launched several marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
